What is urology?

Urology focuses on the health and function of the urinary system and the male reproductive system.

Your urinary system includes several organs that filter waste from your blood and excrete that waste out of your body. After your kidneys filter out the waste, called urine, it travels through the ureters and into the bladder for temporary storage. It exits the bladder through the urethra.

Urologists treat both the male and female urinary systems but only diagnose and treat the male reproductive system. The female reproductive system has its own medical specialty, called gynecology.
